Interviews with me elsewhere on the web

"I based a lot of Kat's situation (apart from the magical bits, of course!) on Jane Austen's own family. Like Kat, Jane grew up in a vicarage with a father who'd started out as a scholar with a university fellowship he gave up when he got married. He took in paying students who lived in the Austens' house along with Jane's large family of brothers and sisters, just like Kat's father takes in a paying student during Kat, Incorrigible. And like the Austens, Kat's family is located in the poorer end of "genteel", which means..."

"Some of my favorite fantasy heroines when I was Kat's age were Harry from Robin McKinley's THE BLUE SWORD (she gets to sword-fight AND have a sizzling romance!), Beauty from Robin McKinley's BEAUTY (who reads Latin fluently and loves books more than almost anything else), and Tamora Pierce's Alanna (who gets to be a knight). Since I grew up, I've added lots more to the list, including..."

"I do most of my writing while lying on the couch with my laptop on my knees, a cup of Earl Grey tea and a bar of dark chocolate sitting on the floor beside me, and printed-out manuscript paper scattered all around me. I also have a Jane Austen action figure standing nearby as inspiration, and on days when I’m feeling insecure, I wear the sparkly tiara from my wedding to give myself a boost of confidence!"

"I've always been a huge fan of Regency romances, especially the ones written by Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. In some of my favorite romances, the heroines have younger sisters who only pop up briefly, just long enough to make some really snarky comments about their older sisters. I always enjoyed those brief scenes and wished they were longer."

"I used to have a LOT of writing rituals - when I was writing A Most Improper Magick, I always read a few of Jane Austen's letters before each writing session to put myself in the right mood, and then I did my writing with a Jane Austen action figure standing on my desk."

"Although I'm grateful to have been born in the modern era, I love getting to imagine myself into past eras by reading and writing historical novels. Adding fantasy to the mix is just another layer of fun! Long skirts, balls, highwaymen AND magic - how could I possibly resist? :)"

"The best way to find inspiration, for me, is by reading historical nonfiction, especially good biographies, or by watching good historical documentaries made for television. For instance, my story 'The Five Days of Justice Merriwell', which is set in an alternate-history, fantasy version of the English Civil War, was inspired by watching the two episodes about Oliver Cromwell and the Civil War in Simon Schama's "A History of Britain" documentary."

"A MOST IMPROPER MAGICK mixes up my two favorites genres of fiction - fantasy adventures and Regency romantic comedies. But I really never planned to write it!
"I was actually already in the middle of writing a different - a very different! - novel, one that was very angsty and dark and adult. It was the kind of novel I felt that I *should* write if I wanted to be a Serious Writer, rather than what I actually wanted to be writing (or reading!). Then, as I was chopping onions one day for lunch, I actually heard Kat's voice very clearly in my head, speaking the first two lines of A MOST IMPROPER MAGICK."

"If I could talk to any author from the past, it would definitely be Jane Austen - or, better yet, I’d much rather exchange letters with her! I LOVE the wit and style of Jane Austen’s letters [...] and I’d love the challenge of trying to keep up with her via correspondence…whereas in person, I think I’d just stumble and trip over my own tongue because I’d be too over-awed!"
